The Savane des Esclaves in Trois-Ilets

The Savane des Esclaves is a recent museum. A private initiative, it was built in the early 2000s by Gilbert Larose, who is passionate about Martinique and its history. A true open-air museum, the Savane des Esclaves is a replica of a traditional 18th century village. Find on 3 hectares,25 thematic living quarters: sugar cane, cocoa, aromatic plants. In the Rue Case Nègres, the way of life of the slaves is highlighted so that the visitor can imagine with emotion their living conditions.

The Banana Museum

If there is a well known fruit from Martinique it is the banana. It represents so much at the cultural and gastronomic level, that a museum is dedicated to it in Sainte-Marie, the Banana Museum. Discover everything about the banana during an indoor visit with an educational tour in images, sounds and videos and an outdoor walk in a garden where more than 60 varieties of banana trees are planted. Plant, diet, flowering, flavor, fragrance, species, the banana will no longer have any secrets for you after your visit. The House of Cane

The Maison de la Canne, as its name indicates, is dedicated to sugar cane. Located in Trois-Ilets, the museum honors the history of sugar cane since its establishment in Martinique while making the link with slavery which is linked to it.

On the first floor of the building, the former distillery of Vatable, is held the permanent exhibition "A land, a plant, a people". On the first floor, there is an exhibition on rum and its production.

The Ecomuseum of Martinique

At Pointe du Figuier is an original museum also located on the site of a former distillery, Ducanet of its name: the ecomuseum. The site that hosts the museum is also full of meaning, it stands on the former place of life of the Caribbean chief Pilote and also of Arawak Indians. This one aims at retracing the history of Martinique by proposing to the public objects, furniture, archaeological vestiges, models and reconstitutions around different collections and themes :

Regional museum of history and ethnography

Immerse yourself in the life of a bourgeois family of the late 19th century! The regional museum of history and ethnography is housed in a splendid period villa in the center of Fort-de-France. Designed in the late 1880s, the villa has housed the museum since 1999.

The collections offered by the museum are based on furniture and decorations, Creole clothing and jewelry and the carnival. Thus you can appreciate the typical charm of bourgeois interiors: sideboards and consoles in mahogany wood, paintings and engravings, old books... At the same time, on mannequins, discover the clothes and jewels worn by the local population, whether they are bourgeois or more modest.

Finally, carnival and music being an integral part of the Martinican culture, a collection of musical instruments and carnival accessories are presented to the public.
